About Southwestern University

Southwestern University is highly regarded nationally as one of America's premier small liberal arts colleges. It was the first institution of higher learning in Texas, chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1840 and is affiliated with The United Methodist Church.

Southwestern's approximately 1,300 undergraduate students currently come from 37 states and nine foreign countries, and choose from 27 majors and pre-professional and certification programs in medicine, law, education, engineering and theology. More that 50% of Southwestern's first year students ranked in the top 50% of their high school class. Average class size is 14 students; the student/faculty ratio is 10 to 1.

Southwestern University's 700 acre campus features tree-lined 100 acre central grounds and a lush green academic mall. Facilities include beautifully restored historic buildings and libraries, as well as two state of the art live performance theaters, spacious sport facilities and recreational areas including a nine hole gold course, a human performance laboratory, an aquatic animal research laboratory, a space observatory and a teaching greenhouse complex. Southwestern's $314 million endowment is one of the highest endowments per student of all colleges and universities in America.

More than 85% of Southwestern's students live in on-campus apartments or residential halls. First and second year students are currently required to do so. Nice, convenient off-campus residential purchase and rental alternatives for third and fourth year students, faculty and staff are very limited.
